|
Insufficient EGR Flow
I have a 98 Ford F-150 and the check engine light came on it is reading insufficient EGR Flow code 401 I changed the EGR Valve and the DPFE Sensor. I noticed that when i turn the truck off the EGR vaccum regulator makes a funny noise is this normal? Any suggestions would be appreciated!

I went through this mine was the egr after i put dpfe on but check there should be two vaccum lines from dpfe sens to the exhaust. They are chrome on mine, mine was full of crap blow them out. Also make sure to disconnect battery or go to autozone to reset computer. As for the noise im not sure.

Did you clean the passages behind the EGR valve really good? These are bad about building up carbon in there.

I did clean the passages but the only one i didnt clean was the line that goes from the EGR to the exhaust could this cause it. Also when i pull the vaccum line from the top of the EGR and check the vaccum the air stutters a little and isn't very strong is this normal? The only thing that i haven't changed is the EGR Vaccum Regulator could that be bad?

There should be no or very little vacuum on the valve at idle. You need a vacuum gauge and run the self test to see if the vacuum vent valve is operating properly. The way we clean the passages is to remove the throttle body and clean with solvent and a brush. You can do it with various cleaners. The noise may be a normal venting of the valve releasing vacuum after it is shut off. I have never listened for one, but the next one in the shop, I will do so. The vacuum vent usually trips a P0402 instead of a 401, but anything is possible.

Thanks I'll try cleaning it again any suggestions or preferences on what solvent to use for cleaning the throttle body? Also do you know where I can get an aftermarket transmission shift kit for the same truck?

Any carburetor cleaner can do the job. Check the net or a local trans shop to see if they have any kits.
