Cool Who wants to see me with my upper plenum off?

Okay, we finally did it. The spider assembly, nut kit and upper intake gasket are replaced and the truck is running beautifully. No more hard start, no more horrible fuel smell, no more missing out and no more struggling power!

Mmm....yummy.

Who wants to stick a finger in there?

At this point, we ran into a teeeeeeny little problem.

The spider assembly that I brought with me to put in wasn't complete. No poppet nozzles / clips / whatever you want to call them.

Um...you can't exactly just jam everything in there and hope for the best, now can you? No. So I ended up having to go to Auto Zone and pay $300 for a new spider assembly WITH the clips on the ends of each line like they're supposed to be in order to even finish the job. At that point, the truck was not going anywhere otherwise.

This means that today, I have to take the assembly that didn't have the little black plastic poppet whatchacallits on the ends back and hope they'll be honest and give me a full refund. I am not holding my breath, though...they did, after all, sell it to me like this to begin with.

There is one last thing that ----- yeah, you can laugh now ------ I can't figure out.

What's this thing?

You see that little length of hose right there? The one going nowhere?

Where does it go? It's lost, feeling sad and blue, can't find its Mommy.

So there you have it. I learned a lot. Anything I missed? Besides the stray length of hose?

Its amazing how those 2 parts can mess up everything.
U did change the engine oil after swaping the CPI/nut kit, didn't u?
-As for that hose, i have no idea. i did not notice a hose randomly sticking out like that, lol. unless someone rigged a replacement vac line. I'll look at mine tomorrow and let u know.
-Also, where did u order the cpi from? it should have come complete, i know mine did, but since u got another one that was, send the other one back.
-Oh and the pics look exactly like mine except i had a busted regulator and a hole in the nut kit so both sides were clean. i can scan a pic if u like.

Hope everything works out for ya

Look at the bottom right of your first picture, the mystery hose goes to something at the front of the intake. EGR maybe?

Re: Who wants to see me with my upper plenum off?

Yes - the 'Next Item on the Agenda' after this repair was to get the oil changed, so that's all done and dandy now. The oil didn't smell of gas as much as I thought it would, but did definitely stink a bit.

REFUND! I took the part missing the poppet retainers back yesterday, explained to them that I am not returning it because it didn't work, I'm returning it because there's no way to find out if it worked or not...because it can't be installed. Showed them a little info from AC Delco, etc that you can't just throw some old ones on the ends of these lines and they were all in agreement - woops, here's your money back. It was easier than I expected!

Steam clean? Holy moly. Should I? Do I need to? Talk to me like I'm a child, please. What good does it do versus what harm would there be in not doing it? How do I do it?

The Mystery Hose: My SES light reappeared. I knew it had to be because I've driven with that stupid length of hose off the truck. When I took it in to have the code pulled off, it was an EVAP code. Crap, now I can't remember which one. Anyhoo, Ronnie tells me that it's surely due to that hose being off, and that he thinks that hose is the one that connects behind everything - between the plenum and the back on the engine compartment - but he was swamped and in the shop alone at the time, so he couldn't get in there and see for me right then.

Yes - that means that here I sit, hose in the front seat of my truck...SES light still on...wondering if I drive it home with the hose STILL not where it's supposed to be, is anything going to explode?

Re: Re: Who wants to see me with my upper plenum off?

actually, bead-blasting is probably better than steam-cleaning. your local machine shop or Napa can do it for you for probably $30. No, I don't think you NEED to do this. You can simply re-install as is.

however, if you do it, you'll have a ultra clean pretty pretty intake !!

Re: Who wants to see me with my upper plenum off?

It should connect to the bottom of the upper plenum, just below the butterfly. Heres how to get it there..
route it above the oil-fill cap, tuck it under the radiator hose and plug it in.

Hawky is correct, a little tube comes out below the throttlebody outlet that connects into..

That said, bruised orange is a tease..(don't make me quote!)

Re: Who wants to see me with my upper plenum off?

Hey - that was simple enough. Thanks! Now we'll see if I'm smart enough to take your simple, uncomplicated instructions and apply it this evening.

When did I become a tease? Ack! I'm a what? Is this going to end in a triple dog dare?

Thanks - I'll try getting the hose back on after work today. Next stop: replacing the transfer case!

Ta da!

The Mystery Hose has been reattached, just exactly where you said it would go!

Thank you! That was so simple - clearly, the consumption of alcohol was a key factor in the three of us not being able to figure out where that hose should have been.
