Throttle cable stuck on 90 Cherokee

I have had my 90 Cherokee sitting for a couple of months and when I went to start it the throttle cable is frozen. Any ideas on how to break it free. I think it got stuck due to rain water leaking in through the windshield seal.

You may want to remove the cable to work on it but in any case, spray down the cable ends with a penetrating oil and work the cable back and forth by pulling on each end. Once it is sliding free, spray in some moly lube to help it repel water and stay loose.

Re: Throttle cable stuck on 90 Cherokee

Just trace it by hand from the throttle body back to the fire wall. There will likely be one bolt holding the cable housing flange to the firewall. The bolt could be on the engine side or under the dash. trace from the gas pedal to the firewall too.

Re: Throttle cable stuck on 90 Cherokee

OK since I last posted I have come to the conclusion that the throttle cable is not stuck. My new question is what is the bar coming off of the part that the throttle cable is attached to? The part has a spring which I assume is to get the throttle back closed after opening. There is a bar that goes down to another part with a cable attached that appears to be what is stuck. I assume this because when I disconnect the bar from the lower part I can manually open the throttle.

I will try and get a picture but any helpo until then is appreciated.

It has taken you a year and a half to figure this out?

Re: Throttle cable stuck on 90 Cherokee

Thanks for noticing. I thought about starting a new thread to hide this but I figured people would help instead of criticize. I have another vehicle and didn't make time to work on it.

Now that we have that out of the way do you know what parts I am referring to?

Re: Throttle cable stuck on 90 Cherokee

Well I found out what I was referring to is called the Bellcrank assembly. I ended up giving it a rap with a hammer and it broke free. I applied some lubricant and worked it manually until it moved freely in both directions.

Thanks for the help and I am sure I will be back to ask more questions as I progress through getting this going again.

Well, it did seem odd that there was 1 1/2 lapse between your posts. If it sat that long, you likely have a growing list of items to address. I'll be glad to offer my meager experience next time minus the sarcasm.
