I have a strange problem the car s10 4.3 1998 this morning when I should start the car was totally dead nor even the clock was working
so I thougt that i maybe forgott the light or something so I bring the battery in to charge it no problem so far the battery seems ok after I check the voltage and it was around 13-14 volt so far so good after I put it back the car started up fine for about 5 sek then the rmp start to go up and down at the same time the batterylight and the seatbeltlight? and then it died.My idea is that is could be the voltage regulator when it should go off it don,t the voltage seems to rise just before the batterylight goes on.You may see on my spelling that I'm not from USA. /Mats |

More than likely it's the alts voltage regulator... Unfortunatly the regulator isn't really servicable...You need to replace the entire alternator...

Welcome to Automotive Forums. Av två onda ting väljer man det minst onda (choose the lesser of two evils...I think) in America, we have a vast amount of aftermarket components for our vehicles. I understand that other countries sometimes have their vehicles' parts accessible, but not so much others. also in America, especially with larger components, or "hard parts" of the engines; such as alternators, starters, water pumps, et cetera, we will buy a completely rebuilt one with a warranty, and have the old one recycled, to be sold at a later date to someone else. in your country, like many others, you probably have small rebuild shops that can get diodes and rectifier bridges, and brushes to rebuild your alternator for your vehicle (or you can do it yourself). with the amazing amounts of different vehicles on America's roadways, it is easier for us to have whole alternators and such on the shelf for a specific vehicle for $100. US Dollars (or about 770 Krona) rahter than a bunch of parts kits for only (115 Krona) $10-15 US Dollars, because of the time consumption rebuilding the units. if you feel that you can obtain the parts for your alternator and are able to rebuild it (or have a shop do this service for you), then, yes, it would definitely be less expensive to you, to do this, rather than attempting to find an alternator for your 4.3L V6 Chevy engine in a place that is probably dominated by Saabs, Volvos, Audis, Lancias, Renaults, Peugeots, and the like. if you decide you want to do the rebuild, www.nordicaudi.com has a forums page that can possibly assist you in the technical aspects of finding a rebuild kit near you and/or may have a technical page specifically dedicated to the tear down and rebuild of one. regardless of whether you do this yourself, or have another one do it, IF YOU DO, you should replace the two internal bearings as well, because it would be ashame to tear the alternator apart, fix it, then have the bearings go bad in 10,000 kilometers. you should look into possibly ordering an alternator from the US (via a website) as it would be nice to have for an immediate fix, since most UPS and FedEx shippers have overnight services, rather than waiting to rebuild yours. hope this helps, chris nrt racing |
