I have 96 Jetta 2.0 . I am having a problem with my engine light coming on and motor no starting in damp and rainy weather. I got the codes read at auto zone Code numbers P0440 Malfunction in Evaportive Emissions, And code p1580 Electronic Throttle Monitor PCm Override ????
If it does not rain out for a couple of weeks the light will turn off Car runs fine. What can this Be???

evaporative emissions....i think that has something to do with the medicine colored wire running out of the air box, im sry i cant be of any more help.

There's no one specific cause for the evaporative emissions code you're getting. Most likely causes might be that your gas cap is missing or loose, or that the evaporative emissions valve is malfunctioning (it controls what portion of the evaporative emissions get let into the engine's air intake), or even something as simple as a leak in one of the lines in the evap system.

Your other code may indicate a problem with the motorized throttle (within the throttle body). If you have access to a laptop running the vag-com diagnostic software, you can run some tests on the throttle and even calibrate it. Often times, problems with these electronic throttles can be solved by removing the throttle body and thoroughly cleaning it (carb & choke cleaner works well). If you end up replacing the throttle body, it's important to make sure that it gets calibrated after it's installed. That's something a lot of garages may not be able to do. Take it to a VW/Audi specialist for that one.

The worst thing about having more than one fault show up is that a lot of times one of them is causing the other. So it's possible that you may only have one problem that's causing both messages (although that seems a little unlikely in this case).

I suggest finding a shop that you trust and that is comfortable with in-depth VW/Audi diagnostics.
