96 GP SE Trans Problem

I recently bought a 96 GP SE with a 3.1 and an automatic trans. It has several problems. I can fix most of tham. The one problem that is bugging me the most is the transmission.

When I press the gas petal in drive the RPMs jump up to 2k before the car starts to move. I also here a whine that sound like a low power steering pump and a clicking sound whenever I am accelerating.

Also, recentlly I have felt the tranny slip at mid throttle but not at full throttle.

The fluid is full and is still red.The car has 156k miles on it.

Does anybody know if there is a way to tighten the bands in the tranny
or maybe something else that could be loose or out of adjustment. I really don't want to have to buy a new trans.

Re: 96 GP SE Trans Problem

Unfortunately, I believe the transmission is on its way out. Unlike the older transmissions there is no real way to tighten the bands in the newer model transmissions. Not only do you have slipping clutches but it sounds like the internal pumps are going bad too. You can try a bottle of Lucas Transmission Additive that may buy you some time but I believe that you will end up with a new or used transmission in the near future.

Re: 96 GP SE Trans Problem

A scan with the proper trans scanner will reveal internal slippage errors or possible solenoid malfunctions, as GTP dad say an additive may help, but it is possible the trans is in default because of an internal problem.

Re: 96 GP SE Trans Problem

That's what I was afraid of. I guess I'll start checking the junkyards for a tranny. I'ts gonna be expensive to get a new one because I am in Germany.
