Question Ls1 "knock"?

Hi, i have a 2000 pontiac trans am. And i know u have to run preimum gas in it. But it has 33,000 on it and i just got it like 2 weeks ago. And i use premuim gas, but i do not know who owned it befor me and what gas they ran in it. So when i frist start it it semms to have a little ping or like a knock. Will this go away after a while?

Ya it goes away but if you rev it up it does it a little. When you rev it up tho it almost sounds like that noise is comming from the muffler. But when you frist start it, it almost sounds like a deisel. ha ha. not that loude but it is that kinda ping. i heard of this befor when people run regular in them and you run premuium for a while and it will go away.

Re: Ls1 "knock"?

If you run regular in it, you shouldn't own it. GM doesn't recommend premium, they require it.

The cold start knock is probably 'piston slap' which is something GM has deemed normal on the cars. Has something to do with the pistons coating material.
I would keep running premium in her and see how that works out.

Did GM require premium in the LT1s as well?

Re: Ls1 "knock"?

I believe so. Although I am not 100% on that.

Re: Ls1 "knock"?

If you look in your owners manual, you will see that LT1's were not required to use premium. Due to the reverse cooling they could run higher compressions without the need for high octane fuel but I recommend using premium anyway and I always have used it .

The answer to the question

Ls1's have a #1 cylinder wristpin problem. It causes them to almost sound like a deisel on some days. Its an extremely common problem on that engine. Its not to big a deal.
