Unhappy 89 535 Gas Smell

Whenever i gas up my 89 535 to the top of the tank, the car will smell of gas. I was thinking this might be because of moisture in the tank, but I'm not sure. This also effects the gas gauge. Can anyone help me out and give me an idea of what I'm dealing with?? I would apreciate it a lot!!

Thanks.

Re: 89 535 Gas Smell

Go to your trunk... Pull back the liner and find the top of your gas tank. You are looking for the fuel pump hole. It's about 6" round and on my my E34 it's located on the passenger side. Chances are you will find a mess of fuel -- and evaporation residue from fuel -- accumulating on the top. Just clean and tighten the 6 nuts to reseat the gasket. I wouldn't bother relacing the gasket unless this does not work. Just retighten the nuts.

You might also like to inspect the area while you are filling up to see if you can trace the smell. Maybe the hose to the gas tank is leaking.

My car use to smell to but after I did the above procedure it was good again.
