Stereo install help

Im going to help my friend replace his factory head unit in his 96 Sonoma extended cab. I wanted to see if anyone could give me some tips (or pics) of how to get to the head unit. It looks like the dash is in two pieces (upper and lower). It looks like you just take the bottom off, and then the top will snap off (maybe a couple screws). Any tips?

Thanks,
Aaron

If it is anything like the 2000 sonoma, there is a screw in the upper center of the dash where the instrument cluster is that has to be removed. Also, I believe the cigarette lighter area has a couple screws. After that, it snaps off. The only tip Id recommend is if it seems like its not budging, theres probably another hidden screw somewhere and check where it is hanging up to make sure before just tugging it harder. Under the steering column under the cover may be some more...its been a while since I replaced mine...

Re: Stereo install help

I watched them do it on my 98. He took the part under the steering wheel off first, then the upper part off. He took the upper part off by the center screw above the gauges, and 2 by the ash tray. If its an auto you'll have to turn the key to on and put it in 1 to get the part over the gear shift...just make sure the e-brake is set.. A few scres and the factory one was out. For the new one to go in, there was a little piece he had to break off in the back...it serves no purpose so it was ok. Hope this helps

On my 93 there were 2 screws on the left side of the glove box and there was 2 on the bottom of the ash tray. when i took those out the rest just snaped out of the top. From there the stereo just slid out.

Dont know if it was any help but thats how mine went.
