Daytime running lights: POPEYE!! WHY??!!

Ok, I have the 2001 LS 2wd Ext cab yada yada yada. I noticed today that one of my daytime headlights is out. I have always noticed these trucks driving with a "popeye" as we used to call it while slugging the passeneger in the arm.
1. Why do these things just "go"?
2. Is there a XENON or one of those fancy highoutput lights I can put in place of the lights?
3. Is it just a bulb you change or is it an entire assembly that gets replaced?

I've used LED's in mine. Then I switched to amber bulbs, they've lasted longer than the clear ones. I've never had this problem with my 99 like others do.

I'm psychic, or is it psycho? Well, I had a 50/50 chance at guessing it right.

Actually, a buddy of mine has the same year truck, and he mentioned that he had heard that there was a problem with water getting into the passenger side DRL. Dunno why it would only effect the passenger side, but that's been his experience.

Re: Daytime running lights: POPEYE!! WHY??!!

I put some eBay Xenon bulbs in at sbout the 6 month mark and three of them blew really fast. Then I got some quality Xenons from a custom truck store (which is no longer in business) and I haven't blown one now in well over two years now. Now watch, I'll blow one tomorrow!!! Thanks for nothing.

Re: Daytime running lights: POPEYE!! WHY??!!

I have not paid much attention to it , but do the 2wd trucks have the same kind of DRL's and if so are there as many on the road that are burnt out as the 4x4's. When i bought my truck that was one of the FEW things the stealership that i got it from did fix for me and the tech there brought up something to think about. He wondered if it was only 4x4's that had them burn out more frequently cause of the stiffer suspension. Something to think about and maybe watch for. Next time you see a silverado with a burnt out DRL, check to see if it is a 4x4 or 2wd.

I havent had a DRL burn out yet, Mine is a 99 with the original bulbs in it. the only bulbs i've changed have been the head lights, and those were just upgrades. I took the factory assy. out about 4 months ago to put the clear diamond cuts corners in and still have all the original bulbs. Guess i've been lucky so far.

Re: Daytime running lights: POPEYE!! WHY??!!

they go out because it always on (if you drive during the day) so its just like any other light, it will burn out after however long, good thing they are cheap and take a minute to replace

Re: Daytime running lights: POPEYE!! WHY??!!

Well you are right. They are cheap. I was looking at wrong prices for the low beams (9006, 9005).
That is the fastest bulb change I think I have ever done. My ford grill had to be disassembled to change light.
I started the thread because i always see GMs with one headlight going in the daytime. I always wondered what was up with that, but since its no big deal..... whatever!
Thanks for replies.

Now I am thinking of some blue XENONS for my truck!!!

Re: Daytime running lights: POPEYE!! WHY??!!

I use to have LED's in mine, The first pair i had was in their for about 9 months and worked fine. Then I bought a new pair for a different color and style and they lasted about 4 weeks. I just left them in their and decided to do away with the DRL's. They did look sweet though.
