cheap parts
Hey guys,
I have to change all the brake parts in my super. Any good places to get cheap parts? I'm in Atlanta, GA Aaron

Cheap parts are just that.
Cheap! Saving money now won't seem too smart when you have to replace the same parts again in 6 months, or they fail at a critical moment. There are numerous manufacturers of VW "restoration" parts out there. Some really care about these old cars. Some are just in it to make a buck. Do yourself and the industry a favor and buy good quality repair parts. The advantages are: 1. You'll only buy and replace them once. 2. You'll be keeping the businesses dedicated to the Classic VW in business. 3. You'll only buy and replace them once. And since you're talking about brakes, this is one area you don't want to scrimp on. VWs aren't the "safest" vehicles on the road, and usually end up in last place in a collision. Especially getting hit in the front. There's not much up there except sheet metal, and a rigid steering column. If you want to save money buying other inferior parts, so be it. But you want to go with the best brake components you can find. Try Wolfsburg West. You won't go wrong.

I agree, do not skimp on parts. This could cause you or someone else to be seriously hurt if the cheap parts fail, and they usually do. Spent the extra money for quality, safety, and longevity. I just put about $1500 into my front end although I could have done it for about $500 I wanted to stay safe and only do the work once. USE QUALITY PARTS. Heres my front end completed.

Boatcop, thanks for the link. I'm always looking for new sources of info and oem parts. I found a reputable VW mechanic, in Austell, GA. Been in business for 40 years and had 6 acres of beetles. Man, do I love scrap yards. 5Gcivic, sweet set of wheels. I was considerring switching to disc brakes and opted to stay OEM. It looks like you did the conversion. How do you like it? Aaron

I am still using drums. But with my knowledge of brakes now I have New everything and have them adjusted properly and the work great, plus I dont need extra braking so I could just lock up my 145's easier.

you can get a disc replacement set for relatively cheap, im not sure how good the quality is though.

I agree. Pay the extra money for parts. If you don,t you'll probably find yourself re-engineering parts that you buy. Price of parts plus your labor and frustration,not so cheap.

pick up any catalog (midamerica motorworks is the one i like best) and you'll see that the conversion to disc breaks is not a cheap one and most kits take away the use of your parking break

Thanks for all the feedback and comments. I went ahead and changed the entire brake system from Master cylinder to slaves. All lines, pads, and accessories weren't nearly as bad as I had expected, so I changed everything. Time consuming but worthwhile. Although, I guess that's the point of having these cars .... to work on them.
