new to the rx7 world...
Dont worry im not new to cars...if any of you check out the 240 board, you'd see i actually have a pretty bad car....so anywho...just bought a 83' 12a rx7...the car is having problems idle'ing. car starts decently easy when choke is on and some gas is pumped into it...once choke goes off it usually kills itself upon reaching low rpm? checked the fuel pump and its pumping just fine...the car was sitting for about a year before i bought it though...i was thinking it is something to do with the carb, but im not sure. figured i would pass the question on to some rx'ers...thanks in advance...
my widebody 240 ![]() the ugly duckling (so far) bought it for $800

Re: new to the rx7 world...
It might be something other then a carb issue, don't quote me on this or anything, but as the car was sitting for a year without being ran or anything I assume, maybe the Apex seals decided to screw off on you, which would mean new motor (2400) Makes that cheap ugly duckling not so cheap.
Gorgeous car though. |

Re: new to the rx7 world...
Ohh Check your timing too, as my buddies 86 with a 13b the timing was out by 180degrees and it wouldn't stay running.
He asked a mechanic friend at work for help, all he did was shoot the poor thing full of Ether, and well, soo much for that motor. |

Re: new to the rx7 world...
Well are you running it on old gas? How old are the plugs? wires? oil? ect ect
Do a FULL tune up on the car before you do anything. Every filter, pick up, hose, flush rad, new gas, clean the carb, new air filter element, lube all hinges on the carb ect ect. then work from there. I bet if you do all this your problem will misteriously dissapear.

Re: new to the rx7 world...
See now if only I'd known this before hand. Though the gas in the car was still good (not even a week old) All the wires connectors plugs grounds, everything was in place, but i just wouldn't stay running.
I still feel sorry for that poor little motor, full can of Ether drained into it. |

ok this is what ive done to it so far...new gas (1/2 tank on top of nearly empty) plugs, wires, dist cap, and i half ass checked the timing by ear. (dont flame for that...i got the car running on choke and listened to it until it stopped hesitating, could still be off of course) hard to check timing when car wont idle at all. car seems to drive fine...just once its brought to a stop to idle it dies. i was guessing possibly the idler spring on the bottom of the carb? just a guess. today im going to take the cat off and see if its not clogged to all hell from sitting and rusting...car has no rust on the body or undercarriage but the exhaust is a rusty mess...so just taking a guess on these things...ok...any more things you can think of? btw fdtt i pm'd you...and most of the hoses and stuff do look pretty new also..non are dry rotted...oil was supposedly changed..looks newer when looked at...the guy i bought if from did some stuff before selling so...

Re: new to the rx7 world...
well i just went out and disconnected the cat...thats not the problem...thing still dies upon idle...just made the car hella loud (go figure). so i guess later today or tomorrow im going to take the carb off and clean it and check the idler spring...see how that goes...so on this board is FDTT pretty much the only one in the know?

Re: new to the rx7 world...
anywho who...quick new update on the car...i put the cat back on and took her for a quick spin...figured i would beat on her a little bit (not sure how high i was revving as the tach isnt working) but drifted her around a few turns and when i gave it gas on something with decent g's she would sputter like she wanted to die...but once going straight again would take off like normal...after taking it out for the drive parked in my driveway and she actually idled for about 2 mins before slowly working itself to die...does this info help any on my diagnosis?

Re: new to the rx7 world...
Sorta sounds to me like a Carb problem. if going around corners makes her almost want to die, then I'd be rebuilding your carb.

Re: new to the rx7 world...
The carb cleaner is a temp fix, I personally wouldn't rely on it. as you may have a deformed internal part. Spring or something, possibly somethings broken. As rebuilding a carb is cheap and can be done in a few hours even by a novice.

Re: new to the rx7 world...
question how is carb cleaner a temp fix...if the carb is just gunked up, and nothing is broken or out of sorts, then i possibly just needed cleaning. right? if this doesnt fix it then i will be doing a rebuild...just try to do this cheap as of now...

Re: new to the rx7 world...
In all my experiences with carbs, I've never found Carb Cleaner to be a permanent fix. Ever.
That is why I am saying a temp fix. The Carb rebuild kit shouldn't be anymore then about 50-60dollars. Last one I baught was in that range. |

well i tried the carb cleaner about 10 min ago....took the car for a ride and the car is still not idleing. few things i noticed on this trip...car seems to slowly be gaining power every time i drive it. the temp guage dont work on cluster (not sure if its temp sensor related or if its disconnected on cluster)(entire cluster doesnt work properly besides speedo, and battery gauge) the car die on me once during the trip and would not restart (engine was up to temp by this time)...and drifted it around some more, and my car has a nice LSD. anywho...does this make any diff on my diagnosis?
