egine just keeps revving

Hi everyone,

this is my first post and its also fair to say I also don`t know much about cars. My problem is this, I have a 1998 1.3 Ford Fiesta Encore and everytime I put my foot on the clutch to change a gear ( both up and down a gear ) the engine starts to rev, the same also happens if I just put the car into neutral when approaching traffic lights, the engine just starts revving.

Any ideas on why this is happening and how it can be fixed would be much appreciated.

Many Thanks

is there a strange "honking" noise when you shut the engine off?is the idle high as well?this almost sounds like a bad idle air control valve.

Lightbulb

Hi, I have a 97 Escort and experienced the same problem with mine xmas 2003.
The engine would occaisionally rev up & down on it's own for five minutes or so whether you where driving or stationary.
After about 3 weeks of it doing this intermittently, it became permanant and was constantly revving on it's own free will up and down ( with a high idle when you first started the car when cold )
It was becoming quite difficult if not quite dangerous to drive it around like this, because when you was driving you would let your foot off the throttle and the car would carry on going as if you still had your foot on it !, so I took it to my local Ford dealer, as another local garage didn't know what it was.
Ford spent the best part of a day scratching their heads over it until they finally found out that it was the idle control valve.
Price of part plus fitting was approx £120.
Hope this is of some help to you.

common problem this is with fiesta's. it is indeed the idle speed control valve, can be cured by cleaning. (carb cleaner).

Re: egine just keeps revving

This is a very simple fix that worked for me. My car is a 1995 fiesta 1.2 zetec. Try taking out fuse no. 32 (3 amp) and clean it. Worked a treat for me. Ive no idea what that fuse relates to in the engine, but was given the tip by a mate who is an RAC man. Was the first thing that came up on his laptop as a possible solution for this problem.
