Check engine light not coming on during start up or in test position.

1998 Explorer V6. Went to get an emissions test and failed because the check engine light would not come on. What steps are there to find out why it is not coming on. Was thinking one might be a burnt out bulb for the check engine light, but is there a way to check for this without taking apart the dash?

sounds like a burned out bulb.not all that uncommon.you should buy a manual that explains how to remove the instrument cluster. since you're gonna have to remove it to change the bulb.
