It is trying to tell you have a problem.
You need to get it scanned for codes and post back code no.

I had a similar problem on my 99 Mercury Mountaineer. I accidentally drove for several miles with the shifter in between the drive and 2nd gear positions. The O/D OFF light started to flash and after a short while of leaving the vehicle off, the light stopped flashing and the Overdrive button on the shifter started to work again. I would suspect your shift linkage may need to be adjusted or something of that nature. I guess it's possible that your O/D has stopped working in the transmission. Hope it's not too expensive, whatever it is. (I am, by all means, no expert on transmissions so definitely have it checked out by a reputable trans shop or dealership.)

BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING, DISCONNECT THE BATTERY CABLE AND THEN REPLACE IT....THIS ALLOWS THE COMPUTER TO RESET........YOUR PROBLEM MAY GO AWAY WITH THAT....MINE DID ON A '95...Good Luck!

I have a 97Explorer Sport that the same thing happened. I disconnected the battery for 10 minutes , replaced the cable and ran the truck for 1/2 hr and no light came on. When I do push the button the OD Off light comes on in the dash. I suspect that it is OK as I just took a drive (150 miles) and the truck has no problems. Must have been one of those Explorer Gremlins
