Yeah, if you push down on your clutch and there's no resistance, try checking your master cylinder. You may be empty...

Re: help with clutch quick -homecoming dance is in 1 week

i just filled up my clutch resevoir with dot 3.i also looked on the back of the transmission where the lever sticks out that disengages/engages the clutch and it moves barely when the clutch is depressed, though i have nothing to compare it to b/c iv never seen what it does normally. but what is a master cylinder?

The master cylinder is the thing that you poured fluid into.

You may have a leak. If your fluid was low, then you most likely do.

But if there's no leak, then you need to bleed the slave cylinder to get your clutch pedal back. Same exact method as bleeding brakes.

Re: help with clutch quick -homecoming dance is in 1 week

ive been researching the master and slave cylinders, and the problem does seem to be in one of those i just dont understand how i can park, sleep, get back in the car and have no clutch resistance. there isnt even any fluid on the floor so i dont think it is leaking.

Also, when u look under the hood and see the lever that controls the clutch,( so i can troubleshoot) where is it supposed to rest when the car is off, mine is leaning towards the right left tire, and that is the direction that the slave cylinder pushes it, so u would think it is supposed to rest in the opposite direction ( towards the left front wheel) so that when u press the clutch it disengages it, and when u release it, it goes back. So is the problem here?,in master cylinder?, slave cylinder?, or hose?, and if it is any of the above is it a doit yourself project?

Re: Re: help with clutch quick -homecoming dance is in 1 week

I blame the fluid gnomes. They are greedy little bastards. Seriously. I parked my car one night. Left for work in the morning and knew immediately the clutch felt weird. I started powershifting so I could at least make it to work. I thought my master had finally died since my slave was only over year old. I added brake fluid and bled it. THe car has been fine since and not lost a drop. I know of a few other people it happened to also. Its a mystery only the gnomes can solve.

Re: help with clutch quick -homecoming dance is in 1 week

lol gnomes...well i guess that's good advice

Don't worry about where it's resting for right now...the fact that it barely moves means you need to bleed it. So grab your 8mm wrench and get somebody to help you bleed it. The bleeder screw is on the slave cylinder FYI. Try that...should take a half hour or so, come back w/ results.

Re: help with clutch quick -homecoming dance is in 1 week

I bled mine myself, but that's most likely the problem... if it's just started... I'd give it a couple of weeks b4 that cylinder is gone or makes you eat that clutch...

Re: help with clutch quick -homecoming dance is in 1 week

I'd say just buy a new master cylinder to make sure, but be sure to go ahead and check the slave while you're at it... it saves time to replace both at once, rather than one now, and the other a few weeks later (I know from experience)... it actually saves money, b/c yo only gotta buy fluid once...

Re: help with clutch quick -homecoming dance is in 1 week

yea thats probably what im going to do is replace the master and slave at one time because i dont see how the clutch fluid can disapear after just sitting in the garage, the problem has to be in one of the two right? And can some one show me a picture of which 8mm nut to bleed it with or better describe it. thanks

And chances are it leaked out as you were driving over time, and then it finally just lost the last little bit as it sat. That is how it happened to my friend's Maxima a few weeks ago. Inspect the lines, on his, neither cylinder was leaking, just one of the lines had a small hole in it.

It happens. I swear it. LOL. Dont replace the master if its not needed. It is a chore. Look under the dash. If there is brake fluid by the clutch pedal then the master is bad. If not dont bother with it.

If you dont have anyone to help you bleed it then open the resevoir, crack open the bleeder valve on the slave and wait. Its gravity bleeding it. I usually let it drain down half way, fill it, let it get half way, fill it, then let it get half way again before I close the valve and top off the resevoir. Works every time.
