Reset service engine soon light

My car runs fine but the service engine soon light stays on.

How can I reset it? My current fix is a small piece if electrical tape, which only covers the lite and removes the irritation.

Re: Reset service engine soon light

What year is your Taurus? If it's 1996 or newer, you should be able to stop by AutoZone (or probably others) and have the codes read at no charge. They might clear the codes for you, or they might have you purchase the parts that will likely remedy the reason the light is on, then clear the codes after you install the parts.

If the light is on, it is on for a reason. You should make an effort to understand the code and fix the problem.

If your car is older than 1996, it is a non-OBD-II system and will require a different code reader to read the codes. Being a Ford, Autozone might still be able to read them and clear them for you. With this system, you can probably also just disconnect the battery for 5 minutes to clear the code. If the light comes back on, then read the codes.
