Question Check engine light trouble codes

Heres the skinny,...1997 Blazer vortec 6...it was running great till I changed the fuel filter, air filter, thermostat and pcv valve. I changed these items because it was long over due. Since they were changed vehicle takes a while to start the check engine light is on and it smells like it is burning rich...
I remember you used to be able to ground the port at the bottom of the dash with a paper clip and then count the times the check engine light flashed and then looked it up to get the error. Can I do the same with a 1997 model....

Thanks

Do you have an Autozone near you? If you do I suggest driving it over there and they will check the codes for free for you. I think OBD1 is what you are thinking of using the paperclip but I could be wrong. I suggest getting it professionally scanned for free at an autoparts store and get the codes printed out or wrote down and bring them back here and figure it out. Good luck

Re: Check engine light trouble codes

And remember and beware on free code checks.

Use Caution when getting the free code checks please.
Some parts places do offer free code checks. And also free repair advice. But beware. Just get the code no and post it back here and someone will help you.
They offer the free code checks in the hope of increasing there parts sales.
Almost all of them will also offer mechanical advice and some know what they are doing.
But just remember most of them are parts people pulling codes for free.
Not trained professional tech/mechanics. Even if they pull a 02-sensor code or another sensor related code it does always mean to replace that sensor and your problem will be fixed.
Please just get the code no and post it back here and someone will help you.
