starting and stalling problem

1998 cadillac deville has trouble starting when engine is warm, it takes a couple tries then starts right up. It is stalling now, started when car was just idled now seems to stall out when driving. One auto repair center said it was my fuel pump another repair center said it was definately not they said could be a number of things, crank sensor perhaps. I paid both dealers for the testing, I'm not sure who to listen to any advise on what to do??? Thanks

Rachael,
Welcome to AF.
if it were the crank sensor, or other items in the engine/emissions management area, your service engine light will be on.
since you did not mention this, I would start with a fuel filter:
this is a $15-20 dollar item, and if it has not been changed in 15-30K it needs it. your trouble may go away.
if not, it may be the pump, but if a shop has already "diagnosed" this, then I would ask for documentation of the fuel pumps psi (pounds per square inch) flow which would be about 42-47psi, and can be checked on top of the engine's fuel delivery rail (there will be a nipple fitting, like a tire's) with a gauge. if they show you a gauge reading less, I would still have the filter changed first (which is less expensive in parts AND labor).

hope this helps,
chris

Re: starting and stalling problem

After changing the fuel filter if the problem is still happening it could be a bad coolant temperature sensor or a MAP sensor. A good mechanic can diagnose this without guessing.
