96 Tahoe, Won't shift out of Park! Please help!

I have a 96 Tahoe LT 4x4 5.7L, and tonight when I went to drive it I could not get it in to any gear. At times in the past its been hard to shift out of park, but never impossible. Is there an easy diagnosis or am I in trouble? Thanks for the help!

Sounds like it is the brake saftey switch interlock. This is what assures you have the brake on when shifting out of park. This is located in the steering collumn near the base, and it might be going bad. On my GMC van when this went, I had to turn the key just far enough forward to release the column lock, and then put it in neutral. I could then put it in neutral to start it. I eventually replaced the switch.

If you are having other shifting problems too though, you may have something going on in your linkage, or the trans itself... good luck!

Re: 96 Tahoe, Won't shift out of Park! Please help!

This happened to me recently, had to stomp on the brake pedal to get it into gear. Remove both rear wheels and brake drums. Screw in the brake adjusters on each brake assembly. That will do the trick. If the brake peddle is not right after this, just back up and hit the brakes and they will adjust automatically.
