'96 to '01 Corolla engine oil gel problems ?
I am considering buying a Corolla between the yrs. '96-'02, and have read of engine oil that gels and damages the engine.
Does anyone know which years have this problem? and is there anything to do to prevent that from happening? Also, Does anyone know if there is a certain year between '96 & '02 that is less trouble prone and more reliable than the others? I know nothing about fixing cars and would greatly appreciate any advice you can give me. Thank you, Clyde howell |

ive never heard of that being a problem with specific makes or models. the only suggestion i have for you is to check out the oil on the car you are going to purchase. if there is any odd things with the oil, usually the damage to the engine is already done and unrepairable. hope this is at least a little help

if you live in a city, then it may be the problem. The engine is not really meant for short trips (assuming these are the only conditions in which you drive the car). The oil doesnt have enough time to warm up causing it to coagulate (spelling?). This is a common problem known as "oil sludge" and it does create problems within the engine. The only way to really avoid it i guess is to check the oil frequently, and possibly drive the car on weekends to counteract with your daily route (which i assume is a short one).
