engine trouble
I am having some trouble with my 1967 chevelle, my problem is that my car sometimes seems to just die while driving, the engine will shut off. At first i thought it might be the carb but it doesn't seem like that since i can start the car almost immediatly. While coasting down the road, i just shift into neutral and start it up and sometimes it will run and sometimes it will die after a few minutes. It is a rebuilt 350 with a holley 750 double pumper (I plan on changing to a carter afb) in the near future. any help will be greatly appriciated

mike,
just a guess here, but I'd start at the carb. did you have any recent backfires? if so, power valve could be blown. a Holley will still push fuel, but can then sometimes flood itself, then, shift to 'N' and she'll start right back up, while still rolling, and back in gear for awhile, 'til the next stall... does it stall more often while braking, or making a left turn? mine did, and it ended up being a power valve. in colorado, I also found that it would'nt blow the power valve as quickly if I went to a 55, as opposed to the standard 65, but in California, you might start at 65 (or 6.5" of vac) and work up. hope this helps, chris nrt racing |

oh yea,
forgot... if it IS the power valve, or if you end up getting in there for anything else, when you buy the valve, buy metering block gaskets, and fuel bowl gaskets, and some buna tube o-rings (if applicable), and lightly coat the gaskets with vasoline, so when you end up in there again in three weeks, or six months, they won't tear apart. also, Mr. Gasket makes little plastic see-thru fuel bowl plugs, so you don't have to spill all over the manifold when adjusting float levels (helps, especially if you have painted your manifold) hope this helps, chris |

when i got the car the engine and carb had 150 miles on it i can see that it does have clear plugs on the side. it would only stall when going straight and never died under braking for me but my sister drove it once and it died when she was slowing down not mashing the pedal, i have tried to stopmp on the brake and it never died. as for backfires it would only do it in the mornings when it was cold. after a few minutes it wouldn't backfire anymore. what do you think about swaping a carter afb 750?
