Re: Nissan altima 97 shifting problem

A bad or out of adjustment stop light switch will prevent the shift inter-lock from releasing. The problem may also effect your brake lights.

Re: Nissan altima 97 shifting problem

The same switch that turns on the power to the stop lights turns on the power to the electro-magnet called a solenoid that un-locks the transmission gear shifter. The first thing to know is that you have to step on the brake to shift out of park position.
