Question A/C pump rattles

Hi, have a -95 Blazer V6 4WD, and the A/C pump rattles when the pump is working. sounds like bad bearings but I donīt know if it comes from the clutch or inside the pump...

How do I find out if it is clutch/pully bearings or pump bearings?

Is it hard to change the bearings?

Regadrs,
Freddy

More than likely it's the clutch bearings... I had this problem myself. Though to be honest, the aggrivation of going through pulling the clutch, then the bearing, then pressing it back on and pressing the clutch back on with the correct gapping, it's just easier and almost the same price just to get a reman from the autoparts store.

Re: A/C pump rattles

I put a new bearing in mine. Bearing only cost like 6.00, shop charged another 15.00 to press the old out and the new in. The cheapest compressor I found was over 200.00

So do I have to remove the pump or can I pull off the clutch from the pump with it in place?

When I removed the clutch, is the bearing in it or left on the pump axis? I haven't realy figured out how it is all assembled...

Is your A/C broken? Mine rattles and it is brand new. It is a reciprocating compressor. It rattles for a living. It is supposed to rattle.

Compressor will need to be removed. Also I forgot to mention that you need a special tool to remove the clutch from the compressor. After the clutch is removed the bearing will be inside the pulley and will need to be pressed out and a new one pressed in. This is not something you can do at home unless you have the special tool and a good hydraulic press.

I think you will open up a bad can of worms trying to fix the compressor yourself . I replaced with a new (not reman) one from advance for under $100 .But if you open the line you still need to replace the dryer and the expansion valve . It may just need an oil charge added . Rob

Re: A/C pump rattles

Also , buying just the clutch cost as much as the compressor and clutch together when I priced it .Rob

I went to a shop and asked what it would cost to fix he problem and they were positive it's the bearing and gave me a price of 3000SEK (=aprox $300) for the jobb. The bearing is about a tenth of that (here in Sweden), but then I have to do it myself...

Have a lot of tools at work, including pullers hydraulic presses, but I will think about pros and cons before deciding what to do.

Thanks for your inputs!
