Tranny has problem shifting
I have a 95 neon. 264 000km.. The tranny has been rebuilt I think around 200 000km. Anyways.. When I drive the car relatively slow (not accelerating fast) the tranny doesn't like to shift gears. It will rev really high, so I will have to put my foot down to the floor to make it shift into next gear. Once it's into the next gear everything is fine but once it starts slowing down again it'll kick back into the lower gear and rev really high.. so again I have to floor it to get it in the right gear. It sounds like it wants to downshift when I'm going too fast for that gear.
Anyone have any idea what is wrong with my car? Is it a tranny problem.. or is there a vac leak? Throttle body problem? any help would be appreciated. thanks |

Re: Tranny has problem shifting
Check the kickdown linkage to the transmission. The 3-speed trans is mechanical and uses a linkage to sense throttle position. I had a bent linkage on one of my cars, did a similar thing.

Have you checked the fluid level? Also what type of fluid do you have in the tranny?

Re: Tranny has problem shifting
I don't have a Neon /Auto to look at right now.
There should be a second cable (right next to the throttle cable) attached to the TB. If you have cruise, you may even have three. One of them should go to the trans. The only thing a have to base my description on is my '83 rampage auto (same transmission though). The cable connects to a lever on the the trans, the cable can get kinked or loose, or possible the lever can be bent or loose and cause erratic shift problems. |

Remove the battery, remove the battery "case", under it you will see the linkage, lossen the bolt and clean the area, using a spray lube (WD40) replace...adjust your tramp down..if you need help with the exact procedure let me know...

this is the procedure to adjust the throttle pressure cable, (the one to your "tramp down linkage") trace the cable back from the tranny to the bracket, there is a c clip (black plastic) on the cable, you must pull this up, may have to use a small screwdriver to get it started. Once it is unlocked move the throttle control lever on the tranny completely clockwise against its stop and at the same time move the cable all the way towards the engine against its stop. Press the "C" clip back in place... I call it a c clip for a lack of better word but it is black in color and on the engine side of the bracket the cable passes through and lifts straight up...good luck
