1990 525 speedometer / odometer

My 1990 525i has approx. 200,000 miles (but a new engine with only 12k).

The speedomoter doesn't start working until I drive the car for about 15 minutes or 10 miles, then it works fine until you turn the engine off for a while.

The odometer doesn't count miles unless the speedometer is working, which means it never counts miles during small trips around town.

Any thoughts or advice? It doesn't hurt the driving, but it would be nice to have them work correctly. I plan on driving the car for another 100K, but I would like to know the actual mileage.

Thanks!

Re: 1990 525 speedometer / odometer

My car is a 1992 525 with a digital speedo. If your speedo is digital the only thing I can think of is that you could check & clean the electrical connections at the speed sensor. Mine is located in the rear differential. I have also read that the sensor maybe the problem so if you replace yours and it fixes the problem, please let the rest of us know.

My speedo reads 10 MPH slow all the time, and I can figure out why!!! ...But I know what you mean when you say it would be nice to have your speedo working all the time.

Thanks for your response. My spedo isnt digital, but from everything I have been reading, I think it is the sensor as well. I'm gonna have it replaced, and I'll post if it works or not.

Thanks.
