Unhappy 94 Cavalier RS Will not start/ turn over

I have a 94 Cavalier that all of a sudden did not start. I had just started it 30 minutes before with no problems. When I turn the key all the lights, radio, fan etc. work but the engine will not turn over at all. We put on jumper cables and cleaned the battery posts. (Also, there is a clicking sound when we do try to start it)

Any suggestions?

We were wondering if it was the starter, if so how do we check it and where is it located.

Thankyou for your help.

Christine

Re: 94 Cavalier RS Will not start/ turn over

i would go straight away with the battery. even with jumper cables if the battery is fubared it still probably wont start. try another battery. check the sides, look for bulging. the clicking, if once is the starter solenoid engaing but not enough power to throw over if repeated fast clicking this is the relays i the car, fuel pump relay etc, usuallu means very little current. the fast clicking would point to battery. the click once can mean battery or starter. if another battery doesn't solve it. get someone to hit the starter with a hammer while you turn the key in the igniton to strart it, make sure they only hit the main body on the starter. it could just have a dead spot. if so it will need replacing at some point. but the car may start if you do this.

i would the starter is bad. if you follow your positive battery cable you should be able to locate the starter. there should be 2 or 3 bolts holding it in. take it out and take it to a parts store(napa, advance autu, ect.)
and have them test the starter. if thats not the problem the it is your distributor.

immpossobile that it is the distributor! the car has an electronic igniton and has coil packs. doesn't have a distributor!!!! Also that wouldn't prevent the car from turning over it would just turn over but not fire!!!

aslo the positve cable goes to more than just the starter.

location of the starter I seemed to forget. well i don't know whether you hvae the 2.2 4 cylinder or the 3.1 V6 but in any case the starter is on the front of the engine close to the bottem, so will be between the engine and radiator. It's a large cylinder with a smaller cylinder attached to it they look like this;

it's where the motor joins the transmission and the cone shaped piece on the silver and goes into your trnas and turns the flywheel or flex plate depending on whether it's and auto or 5 speed but they will be the same starter. they are heavy though if you remove it. just so you know

Thank you for the help.

It was the starter and we replaced ourselves; which was much easier than we thought.

your starter is located on the left front of your motor and can be tested by jumping a screw diver across the terminals there's a wire on ur positive side of ur battery that will lead u straight to the starter, it may be loose
