Help computer guys! (McAfee is retarded!!)

Ok, so just yesterday McAfee has been blocking websites that it shouldn't be. When I go to yahoo, it works, but as soon as I try to log in, I get redirected and this message:

Warning: Potentially Dangerous Web Site Detected!

You have been redirected to this Web page by the McAfee AntiPhishing Filter. The Web site you requested is in our list of Web sites that are potentially trying to obtain unauthorized confidential information. If you proceed to this site, you may be at risk, especially if you have clicked on this link from an e-mail.

Remember: Financial institutions will never ask you to confirm personal information through the Internet.

This also happens when I try to see anything aside from the main page of photobucket(like trying to access my account). I've tried disabling stuff and to no avail. When I am redirected, I get this address put in the url bar: C:\Documents and Settings\tony mester\Local Settings\Temp\redirect.html but the wierd thing is, if I tried to go in there myself and look at any files, I can only get as far as the "tony mester" folder, there is no "Local Settings" folder in there. This confuses the hell out of me.

Any help guys?

Re: Help computer guys! (McAfee is retarded!!)

"Local Settings" is a hidden folder. Browse to the "Tony Mester" folder then click "Tools" (on the toolbar). Select "Folder Options" then click the "View" tab. From there click the radio button that says "Show hidden files and folders".

Redirect.html is the standard webpage that Internet Explorer shows you when it can't find the URL you are looking for. You'd get it if you were to start Internet Explorer without being connected to the internet (IE will try to open your homepage but since you aren't connected it will fail, then it will show you the "Redirect" page).

I don't know why your getting it now though - I'm not familiar with McAfee (I use Symantec).

In the Mcafee's security center disable its antiphishing option or the entire internet security section. Those are not that vital just use common sense during surfing. Of course make sure you don't disable the firewall or antivirus protections too.

Arg, I can't find that option anywhere... Can you be more specific?

And btw- it says that it is McAfee SpamKiller that does this.

I checked that subtab thing and couldn't find squat about filters...

Solution: disable McAfee temporarily, see if it corrects the problem, if yes uninstall McAfee and throw it in the bin where it belongs (right next to Symantec's offering)

I tried disabling everything and it still doesn't work.

I don't want to uninstall it, my mom will shit a brick and be like "blah blah you're going to get us so many viruses RAAAHHH." because she's too cheap to get Norton

re: mcafee

Diconnect from the internet. Physically remove the cable. Un-install mcaffe and re-install it. IMO it is much better than norton. Try installing the firewall before you install the anti-virus part.

Several suggestions posted have been the best ones -- namely those involving uninstalling the offending program and reinstalling it into the nearest garbage bin. Next, you or your parents should go to the store and pick up a REAL firewall (by this I mean some sort of router or router/switch combination.) After that is setup, hide the Internet Explorer icon from your desktop, and start using FireFox. Last, download AVG antivirus or avast! antivirus (which I use) -- both are free, and both are excellent. Then download and install AdAware, and plunk its ass right in the middle of the desktop, rename it as RUN ME AT LEAST ONCE A WEEK, DAMMIT!

This should be sufficient to barely cover your ass McAfee and Norton probably do more in terms of highjacking your computer than 75% of the crap you'll find on the internet. They'll chew up system resources, bungle defrags and error checking (steer clear of crap like Norton's "WinDoctor" program if they're still including it) and cause you just as much trouble as popups would in terms of hindering your browsing and whatnot. The best thing you can do is take a second computer (one that you can periodically format without any concern for important stuff) and use THAT as the internet browsing computer. Keep the good computer away from any internet that isn't known, safe websites.
