starter button

would anyone know how to hook up a start button? I found one at walmart rated for 60 amps but, no directions, would 60 amps be strong enough?

That would depend on what you were trying to accomplish with the added button. Is it added security with a hideout button, replacing the key?? or what other??

Since you are only carrying the current the ignition switch would carry, that rateing should be more than enough. The pull in winding of the solenoid should draw no more than 15 amps (hope I'm safe with that cause it's been a while since I tested a pull in winding). Most of the newer Jeeps use a starter relay between the key and the solenoid on the starter that would reduce the draw thru the ignition switch as well.

Re: starter button

I still want the key to work but, I have a tendency to misplace my keys at home, and need to find them in a hurry so I wanted a backup way to use my jeep, plus I think it would be kinda cool to have a starter button, like the new lexus has. I know the wire that goes to the starter coil thing from the ign switch is atleast 10 or 12 gauge, it is a pretty thick wire...

Re: starter button

Won't you still have a problem if you don't have the key? You'll need to unlock the steering column won't you? Other than that small detail you could do it with a hidden toggle switch plus the starter button.

Re: starter button

I've not been into the auto transmission shift lock mechanism but the steering wheel lock you likely have to get fairly deep into the steering column.

Someone else may have better insights into those areas.

If you want to be able to start it with either the key or the starter button, you will need a toggle switch to do what the key does in the on position.

It would take some planning but it should be do-able with a few more parts than just the button you already have.

Re: starter button

I have a remote start and all that does is energize the ignition wire which I think is orange, and the starter which is the purple wire, all I would need to do is connect the orange and red wire with the switch which would be the run position and the purple wire with power to the starter button. How big of a switch do you think I would need to power the ignition circuit? T have a 30 amp toggle switch would it be big enough?

Re: starter button

thirty amp rating should be lots big.

How would the auto shut down work out when you don't have the key in the ignition. Do the connections you describe bypass that part of the system??

Re: starter button

Most remote start units I've seen shut off the engine if you put them in gear without the key in the ignition when you go to leave after warmup.

Prevents theft of idling, remote started vehicles.

Re: starter button

mine has auto shutdown then, it dies when you touch the break or excede 3000 rpms, the shutdown for the starter button though should be the toggle switch...
