Tacho install probs

Hey guys, installing a tacho in my VR series 1, i have read up on some forums and everyone that has fitted them to a VP or VN has uses the wiring behind the dash from the old indash tacho, i tried that but with no success, i can get the power and earth from behind the dash and set my shiftlight and play with it but the tacho signal is dead. i have tested it on my friends corolla and the tacho is if fine working order. I also tried the brown wire from the coil pack as that was suggested on some forums but no luck either, my local auto electrician doesnt know and the guys at autobarn have no idea. Anyone got any ideas? do i need a signal converter. Its a Type R 5" tacho. cheers boyz
