ive got a 95 vr-4. since i bought it i never wanted another car but that one. since i had been driving 5 speeds my whole life it didn't take much time to get use to. Except for one thing. 1st and 3-6th work perfectly. but for some reason you have to guess the shift exactly right or it will grind to hell. so for 5 months ive just been guessing and missing every now and then. ok .... one morning i let my friend drive down the street to mcdonalds for some breakfast (baad mistake, don't ever let anyone else drive your car!! soon as he got back he said that 2nd gear didnt work. i got pissed. he said he heard a crack after it happened. after a couple of hours 1st and 2nd were out so i had to start my vr4 out in 3rd. i know it was stupid but i couldnt get to work anyway else. about the 4th day i got caught up in traffic and i was on an incline, so i put it in 3rd gave it a lot of gas and let off slowly to gain momentum. i start to smell like this burning rubber/fiber smell it got bad. smoke started pouring out of the hood. i coasted in 2 lanes into a small parking lot where i had to park it. All the gears were shot. wouldn't move. i had to get it towed to a dealership to get it checked out. they wouldnt touch it cause it's a getrag and that's what they thought was wrong. No one knows what is. the crack, and the smoke, someone with some knowledge behind this please help me. it's just sitting in my garage gaining dust.

The smoke and burning and not being able to use any gears is your clutch, you roasted it with that hill and starting in 3rd. The other stuff sounds like syncros or shift forks in the tranny.

Yeah, they're probably right when they said it's a Getrag...notorious for synchros. Sounds like your shift fork selector thingy is gone along with the first few synchros. Probably not your friends fault since it was bad beforehand. Smoke was just the clutch burning up. You need a tranny.
