85 Lynx, Stalls at stops, bad idle.

1985 1/2 Mercury Lynx 1.9L Carb
Power Steering / AC

I bought my car in June, for 100 bucks. It had sat for 6 months. All it had wrong was a stuck starter solenoid, causing it to start constantly. I fixed that, it ran great. About 3 weeks later it stalled out on the road, going 40. It ran rough and wouldn't run above 10 mph. I stomped on the gas a few times and it stopped. I figured it was the Fuel Filter, i changed that. A few weeks later it did it again, only this time it took about 30 minutes to even stay running again. Just getting this info out there, if its any help. After that i was going down the road and bleh, engine dies. Won't start. I check the tappets via the oil cap, they arent moving. I then changed the timing belt. Worked fine for a few days. Then it started stalling out, checked my timing tension, and i see the water pump bearing is GONE. The pumps pully is going back and forth throwing the belt almost off the gear. I take timing belt off, put on new water pump, replaced timing, A-OK. Runs fine for 2 or 3 weeks, then it starts idling rough after the choke cuts off. I checked timing, it was fine. I put all new plugs, wires, distributor, and rotor. Still runs rough. I have been pretty good at fixing this car so far, but am stuck on this one. I assume it is the EGR valve but i want some expert opinions of what else could be wrong (that is hopefully cheaper than 70 to fix). To test the egr (with my new found knowledge of how EGR valves work, in theory), i tried sucking on the egr vacuum line. I would assume the car would stall out or run even rougher, correct? No change at all! I tried blowing into the valve (lol, no theory here, just for kicks) and it didnt do anything either. I tapped the crap out of the valve with a rubber hammer, to try to get all the carbon deposits off. No joy, however i did notice on the big wacks it seems to sputter a bit (i figure it was just because the egr valve is mounted the the intake manifold, which when vibrated in turn vibrates the carb). Oh, and i also checked for vacuum leaks by spraying the area around the intake manifold gasket with starting fluid and it didnt make it rev up any. I really could use a detailed vacuum diagram tho (if anyone know where to get one of those free, let me know). I checked the vacuum line going to the egr valve for suction and it doesnt seem to have any vacuum. I also put the tip of my finger on the EGR valve vacuum inlet, and felt a very SLIGHT vacuum.
So, let me know what you think.

Oh, and also i notice a lack of power, anyone ever driven a lynx? It seems slow to me, but i dont have another lynx to compare it to. It takes about 20 seconds (my guess) to get up to 70.

Thanks.

Sounds like your ignition module is failing. Do you have spark when it won't start ? You should be able to get a module pretty cheap aftermarket.
