Wont start on first turn

I just got the car and it wouldnt start when I first turn the key.Not every time, but it did it a few times. I need to get gas, lol, but I think I might not be getting enough spark or it might need a new starter(i hope not, i just got the damn thing!)

Re: Wont start on first turn

you still having trouble with not starting icemike? If you r could you be more specific. Just a few questions. Is it not doing anything(ded no lights come on) or is it just not turning when the keys turned?

Yep,except now it does it all the time. Whenever I turn the key I have to give it gas. I found out more and someone said it might have a bad idle because of the throttle position sensor might be f-d up,or might be a fuel problem.(Cant hold pressure?)Im not surewhat it is. I heard its pretty common with grandams with higher mileage. But my lights work fine.

Re: Wont start on first turn

I think you were right with the "can't hold pressure" thing. It sounds like you have a bad fuel pressure regulator. How many miles?

Re: Wont start on first turn

I agree that it sounds like a fuel pressure regulator problem. Get your hands on a fuel pressure tester (I believe Auto-Zone offers it in their free tool loan program). You should have 41-45 psi at the schrader valve key on/ engine off.

Re: Wont start on first turn

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have this same problem..

I am new to the forums *never posted, just reads*

Umm.. car info.

99' grand am se
around 148k miles? *I know -_- lots* Runs Great *thumbs up*

Anyways, yea... it idles around 650 in park no AC
I figured it was my driveway being slightly a ramp (ie. no fuel to be where it exactly needs to be) but I've noticed the problem elsewhere, 3 tries recently *untill I gas'd it* it wouldnt start

Re: Wont start on first turn

I was having some rough starting issues with my 2001 GT.
Changed the plugs from some cheapys to ACDelco's. Problem solved.

Bad spark can easily cause starting issues.
But like mentioned above, don't rule out fueling.

Re: Wont start on first turn

You got the wrong plugs.

I had the Bosch....ran like crap. Wouldn't start all the time.
Went back to the Delco stockers. Much better.

I def. like the bosch better than the others. Its not the plugs causing the problem,it's been doing this before I got new plugs.

Re: Wont start on first turn

bosh plugs work great for 10-20k miles. then the electrode starts to fall (probley exsessive heat), making the gap smaller, making it run like shit.

On a carb motor they(bosh) seem to be fine, but not with MFI. From what I've seen anyway. My 76' 442 has them, starts perfect. Had some in my 99' GA and they fouled out with in a couple months and changing the plugs twice with in months sucks!

But if the new plugs dont make it start right off hav the fuel pressure checked . Get the TPS checked out, it maybe on the fritz, but no car will always start right up first click every time.
