Unhappy Wont start Mystery ???????

When i try to start my truck all i get is a clicking noise at the starter. This tells me that my ignition switch is ok cause its sending fire. I had my starter tested and they said it was fine. I tried replacing the battery and didnt help. I replaced the Neutral Safety Switch and it started and ran for about a week (during that week it still had problems starting periodicly). Now it is broke down again at my home with the same problem. I checked the battery cables and starter wires and they seem fine. One cable is kinda stripped where it screws into the battery (side mount post) but it stays in fine and sends juice to the whole truck ie: lights, dash, etc. I dont understand whats going on. It has me stumped. Please any assistance or advice would be GREATLY appreciated ???

Re: Wont start Mystery ???????

well considering the ammount of details about your ride that you left out , it could be many things. Dirty/loose connection, bad solenoid. I am kinda leaning to a bad connections considering you said that one post is kinda stripped a bit. It may be getting emough of a connection for the lights to work ect but not enough when the load is applied to try and start.

Re: Wont start Mystery ???????

Clicking is usually a sure sign of low voltage going to the starter.
I had a problem like that on my son's truck. I started with a meter on the battery posts, 12v. Went from the negative post to the starter solenoid, 8.5V. This was through what appeared to be a fairly new cable, 2ft long. Checked the posts again, 12v. Checked from the negative post to the CONNECTOR on the pos side, 8.5v. The battery connector on the cable was actually cracked, so was dropping almost 4volts from the post to the cable. Really strange problem, but was glad to find it.

I dont get it. I took your advice and replaced the starter and didnt turn over. I checked the voltage at battery and got 12v but got 9 volts at starter end of cable so i replaced the cable. The truck started and i drove it to the store a mile away. When i came out it wouldnt start but it at least turned. The engine kept turning but i want getting any fuel to the throttle body. Sometimes the fuel pump kicks on when you turn the key and sometimes it doesnt ?????

Is something happening in my truck im not seeing? Owned for almost two years without a problem. Now the spark plug wires, the starter, the fuel pump all go out within a week ??? Power surge causing it maybe?

LOL ........ truck would make a nice bonfire. Anyone have a match!!!

Re: Wont start Mystery ???????

........... I did not see anyone give you advice to change the starter and you are still leaving out a ton of info that can be useful. What year is your truck for one. It could be the fuel pump going out depending on the year, it culd be the ignition module starting to act up, could be bad cables........you need to provide more details.

"I checked the voltage at battery and got 12v but got 9 volts at starter end of cable so i replaced the cable."

That's definetly a problem. Did you really scrape the posts before you put the new cable on? Did you recheck the voltage at the starter to make sure it's getting 12V now?
It sounds like you've got a bad/corroded connection either on the battery posts, or on the ground cable running to the frame. Take a wire brush to all of them, squirt them with WD40, and tighten everything down.

Dont get me wrong im not blaming anyone at all for bad advice or nothing. I took the advice i was given and made the choice myself to change the starter which turned out to be the correct problem. I was just wondering if anyone knew anything about power surges or something of that nature that might be making all these parts go bad in such a short period of time.

My battery and cables are all new now and i have that problem fixed. The battery isnt the problem now. The starter turns the engine over fine now but im not getting any fuel. The fuel pump kicks on sometimes and sometimes it doesnt. I just cant figure out why so many electrical components are going bad all within a week. Cables, starter, fuel pump ........ all in 6 days and havent had a problem with the truck before.

Re: Wont start Mystery ???????

well you are also in the wrong forum , this is for 99 and up nbs. Either it is the fuel pump porking out or the ignition module. The ignition module is easy to remove and have tested, it coltrols the spark and fuel.

Lol didnt think about the ignition module. I guess as soon as i find it ill go have it checked lol. Thanks for the tip.

Also i didnt post in this forum, i posted in another forum and when i went back to check my post the next day the admin left me a message on that forum saying my post had been moved to this one. Not sure why but probably because i didnt note the year of my truck in my original post. Sorry about that.

Re: Wont start Mystery ???????

The ignition module is located under the distrubuter cap and rotoe and looks like this: it is a matter if just unplugging the plugs and removing the two screws.

I had an old v6 Celebrity that would not start... Changed the module, and no more problems... except that I still had an old Celebrity
