Question cat question

I have a 1996 firebird. It has a 3.8 in it. I recently got a flow master exhaust pipe put on it but didn't take off the cat converter. The O2(oxygen sensor) is in front of the cat and there is some kind of plug-in after it too. If i took the cat off, would it mess with this sensor some how? And if i took it off, i know someone had there's taken off and it made it back fire, would this happen to mine? Please help....thanks

Re: cat question

You have to install a bypass if you have 2 oxygen sensors before and after the cat when you remove it. This also could cause a inspection issue, check your local laws.

first u do need to check your local laws. im asuming its a v6 3.8 some need the back pressure if not just take it out. the alternative if you must have a cat order a high flow cat there is little to no restriction. when you look inside u will see what i mean. dont worry about the plug as long as there isnt an 02 sen. there its all good.

Re: cat question

Local laws on cats are not the issue here, it is a federal offense to remove it.

where would i check to see if i would need the back pressure or not? its not an o2 sensor(pretty sure) but there is a plug in. wont that turn on my check engine light or somethin?

where would i get a high flow cat? not real expensive

i could be wrong but i believe the higher the compression the less back pressure you need. if you got higher than 8:1 you should be fine. try to find the eng. specs for your car. as for the cat im assuming you live in the states. i cant remember the name of your parts stores. but its the equivalent of a lordco in canada. i had to pick up some parts in bellingham
wash. oh yeah there called SCHUCKS, i believe. if u have one in your area try them, i think they range from 50-150 rough est. for a universal fit.
hope that helps.
