1996-2001 Regal's,Any chronic problems ?

Hello, I am new to this forum.
I am considering replacing my failing 1985 Monte Carlo with a Regal between '96 & '01, [u]But (only with the 3.8 Liter engine.) I am overwelmed and confused by the amount of information on the internet about problems with these cars. Is there anyone that can advise me on which year between '96 & '01 is the most reliable? If there is a certain year, are there any chronic problems that I should be aware of?
I know nothing about fixing cars, and would greatly appreciate any advice that would help me.

Thank you,
Clyde Howell

These cars are actually pretty reliable....3800 is one of the best motors made....some of them do have an issue with the lower intake gaskets, and some of them have had problems with the tranny....4t65e.....if you dont know alot about cars i would suggest having a friend , who knows about cars, come with you.....when buying used, alot depends on how it was driven , and how it was maintained

I've got a 2001 Regal GS (46K miles) and it has been totally problem free. The dealer while under warranty applied some things that it needed from the GM TSBs (Technical Service Bulletins) but that was more of preventive maintenance. No actual malfunctions whatsover.

On our '99 Regal LS (107K miles), intake manifold (lower and upper) gaskets per a GM TSB (01-06-01-007A) done under warranty. CAT convertor went bad around 85K miles. Sticky tranny PCS solenoid but "Lubegard" took care of that. Otherwise, normal fair wear n tear like brakes and struts. The engine is solid and built like a battleship. Doesn't burn any oil and runs as strong as the day it was purchased.

Good luck!

we have a 2001 regal with 89000 on it have had a problem with the head lights flashing (pulsating) when you decelerate going down a hill slowing for stop.out of warranty still not fixed. cd player has always skipped, shifter was replaced (ign interlock was messed up), tie rod ends, alternator, and a window motor. other than that it has been a great car the 3.9 is a great engine.
