Free mods?

I just got my car, and Im just about broke. I was just wondering if there was any free mods I could do to get any extra hp or gas mileage at all out of it.(besides weight reduction) Are there any restrictors in the airbox? Or how about drilling a few holes in the bottom of the airbox, though I dont know if that will work witha stock air filter. Also, I was wondering if a K&n flat panel filter from a 96 monte carlo z34 would fit into my stock airbox. Its practically new, and my friend would give it to me.

Re: Free mods?

What engine?
Remove your MAF screen
Keep your tires properly inflated (32 PSI is the reccomended level for "ride comfort" - pump them up to 38)
Run a can of seafoam in a full tank of gas
Remove / straightpipe your exhaust resonator (10$ at where I had it done)

If you tell us what engine, we can give you more info on the intake / filter

its a 99 3.4 v6 OHV SFI, and I had thought about the straight pipe, but would it sound ok on a 6cyl? My friend had a GMC jimmy witha 4.3 v6 and did it and it sounds like shit

Re: Free mods?

Yes, the K & N drop-in should fit. Yes, the removed resonator will sound fine. I did it on my 3.4 on my 01 GA and it makes it sound good. It's not loud, but when you get on it it makes it sound more aggressive. Deffinately worth it. The inside of the resonator is like a 50% restriction, so it helps out a little with mileage, and will add 1 or 2 hp in the upper rpm.

Should i get the pipe welded up, or would exhaust clamps work good enough, because I dont want any leaks. Also, I was just driving my car a little while ago on a small, curvy, and kind of bumpy road and I was doing like 50, and the car was like making like rattling, clanking noises. It was probably just the road, but Im not sure.

Oh yea, what about the holes in the bottom of the airbox? If I drilled holes in the top part of it it wouldnt help becausethe air would probably just circulate back out becuase of the "ram air".

Re: Free mods?

There are no free mods, unless your neighbor has a GA, and he's an alcoholic LMFAO!

Drilling holes in the air box really dosnt do much. I guess you cold drill some 1" or 2" holes in the bottom, if you do the top it will let air bypass the filter and thats no good!

Buy some cheap cone filter with a 3" inlet and stuff it right onto the MAF with the screen taken out. You will get some heat soak but it will breath mucha betta. On the resonater you might be able to knock out the baffles with a broom stick or something and save some cabbage, and that way you wont need to buy a new pipe. Good Luck
