rear gears

how much of a noticeable difference will i recieve from putting 3.73 gears in? also how much would my gas mileage go down? I have the same questions for the 4.10 gears. my car is a 96 3.8, auto , thanks in advance

The main difference will be in the RPMs, I also heard that gas mileage isnt that big difference too. 4.10 gears arent also really recommended if you do alot of highway driving.

Re: rear gears

do you know what gears you have now....i think there 2.73 and if so yes you will see a big difference....i went from 2.73's to 3.42's and i felt a good difference and my gas milage got better.....it all depends on what you drive more...city or highway...i do about both equal so for somereason i get better gas milage with my 3.42's. and since you have an auto probably wouldnt go with the 4.11's

He has an RS so it's either 3.23 or 3.42, can't remember which, but he has LSD

Re: rear gears

yeah i was thinking it was the 3.42 but i could be wrong, i spend about equal time in the city and highway

Re: rear gears

3.73's wont be TOO much of a difference, 4.10s are always nice but you'llbe a few hundred RPM more on the highway and your gas milage may go down a tad, but a lot of people notice better citymilage with 4.10s

i would go with 3.73 if you are spending equal time on the highway as the cities... 4.10 is a little deep for an automatic in my opinion...

Re: rear gears

why's it better on a manual?

for example, the 5 speed v6's have a worse O/D ear than the autos (.72:1 to .70:1 or soemthing liek that) but some people still say "oh max 3.73 for auto... 4.10 for manual..."

well generally it is correct, i didnt' know v6's top gear on there auto was more shallow than top gear on the manuals... most of the time its the other way and 4.10's are usually too deep for an auto, because they're top gear is generally deeper than manuals...

just because it doesn't apply for v6's doesn't mean that it is usually a good rule of thumb
