Buying a 1993 Towncar what should I lookout for?

I am looking at 1993 Towncar, what know problems or things to inspect closely in this year. The paint, interior and underneath look very clean it has 84,000 miles on it. I have not road tested it yet but will when I have some info on what to beware of. They are asking $3800, and depending on if everything works and how it rides I wilol bargin from there. I also live in Buffalo New York, how are these cars in the snow ? thanks for all replies.

You need to be aware of tranny shutter, Fords are common for this. This is a sensation like you are going over bumps in the road usually at a lowe rpm near or right after a shift. This means the tranny has not been reg serviced. Right when you first start it does it smoke?? If so it has valve guides that leak. 3800 is way too much. I sold a 92 2 years ago for 2000. I can buy a 97 anywhere almost for 6000. this should be 3000 or less. Check to see if the check engine light is on or not. You can buy a scanner for about 30 for this year of lincoln. The EGR fails in these cars and it is 300 to fix.

The 4.6L motor is notorious for eating up plug wires. Make sure you get OEM Motorcraft wires and you shouldn't have any problems. Aftermarket wires tend to breakdown over the course of a year. Also, fuel filter, MAF Sensor and Vacuum Check Valves are known trouble spots. Also, the EGR channels clogging up are the real culprit in lousy gas mileage, rough idle and hesitation on accelleration. You can clean the MAF sensor (CAREFULLY) BY SPRAYING THE TWO SENSOR WIRES INSIDE WITH ELECTRICAL CONTACT CLEANER AND ALLOWING IT TO DRY THOUROUGHLY.

A couple more things.... front hub bearings and e-brake shoes sticking.

Other than that, you should have a pretty decent car. My '92 just turned 166K and I've had it a little over 16 months after buying it as a salvged car on ebay last year. Good luck!
