The SES light is an indicator on the dash that lets the driver know that the PCM has detected a fault. There is a code stored in the PCM. Go to autozone and have them pull the code, post it here and we can tell you what is going on.

Re: Engine Service Soon!
It could be that the fault that was detected cleared itself. This is not uncommon. Forgetting to properly tighten the gas cap can cause a fault that is cleared the next time you fill up and properly put the cap on.
Your bulb could be burnt out. Your post suggests that it is off as soon as the engine starts. It should in fact be on for a moment or 2 upon starting and then shut itself off. |

Re: Engine Service Soon!
The gas cap was intended as a common example only. I have no idea if it applies to your situation.

If the PCM detects a fault, the SES light will turn on.
If the PCM detects the fault has passed the self test, the light will turn off. Either way, there is a code stored.

Re: Engine Service Soon!
Just to comment on this. I have had my service engine soon light on for quite a while, so I took my van in to a shop this past week and had them run a complete diagnostic and they gave me a nice printed out sheet with every problem they found. I just used the sheet to get the parts I needed (plugs, wires, fuel filter) and made all the repairs myself. I'm thinking this is the method I'll use from now on instead of trying to figure out the problems myself. The diagnostic cost $70 so it wasn't unreasonable, and the SES light went away after a couple of starts.

Re: Engine Service Soon!
You likely could have gone to Autozone and got the same answers for free. Punch in the DTC into google usually will give you more then enough information on possible causes.

Re: Engine Service Soon!
Cdru, cool thanks for the info. I originally took it in with the expectation of letting the shop do the work, but then when they gave me an $1100 estimate, I decided to do it myself and found the printed out diagnostic to be a pretty handy thing to have. Next time I'll check out autozone and save the money

Re: Engine Service Soon!
They wanted $1100 to replace the plugs, wires, and fuel filter? Ouch. I'd find a different mechanic. $70 to run diagnostics may sound reasonable, but when you consider it takes then about 30 seconds to pull the codes, it suddenly doesn't seem reasonable.

Re: Engine Service Soon!
CDRU. Sorry I wasn't clear. The $1100 was for the following
Replace the plugs Replace the wires Replace the fuel filter Replace both front hub assemblies Perform and alignment Do a thorough cleaning of the fuel injectors As far as the $70 being resonable, I just look at the time it saved me having to "troubleshoot" the few problems I had, and it's still reasonable in my eyes. They also did more than just pull the codes, they used the computer to point them in the right direction and then they did a visual inspection, like pulling a couple of plugs to see how they looked, etc. With all that being said, like I stated earlier I'll try Autozone next time and have them give me the codes and I hope it works out because I would rather keep my $70 (reasonable or not) |
