better to boost a d16y8 or zc?

ok im looking to build and boost either a dohc zc or d16y8. but my question is: is the zc worth a damn to build and boost and if so how much more of a head ache would it be to find all the right parts for it? i have heard they can be junk motors but i have never pushed mine that far so i dont know. im leaning towards the y8 but i already own the zc. it dont bother me if i have to spend a little bit of money to buy all the correct and quality parts. i just need a little input and opinions to kinda help make up my mind, in the end im looking to hopefully boost 18-20psi and make 250-300whp. thanx alot guys

Re: better to boost a d16y8 or zc?

well if you are looking to run that much boost, than you are going to be looking at a fully built motor. so id just rock it with the ZC you have. Personally I hate those motors, but a freashly built motor is a built motor and will last as long as its done properly.

if i was gonna choose between and stock ZC and a stock y8 for boost, id choose the y8.

you're looking at potentially running 20 psi. so either way you will need to rebuild, you & i both know that. it is a tough call because you bought you car with a ZC already in it. it's not like you choose to buy and spent the money for it. i suppose this is how i see it....

ZC pro: can get cams + cam gears and have the slightest bit more of adjustablity

ZC pro: you already have it, just have to rebuild

ZC con: not as much aftermarket support

VS.

y8 pro: aftermarket support

y8 con: you have to buy it before you can rebuild it. can possibly resell the ZC to help fund the rebuild

i hate to say it but we can not decide for you. different people build different engines for different reasons. you have to decide which engine is right for your reasons

If it was me i would go y8. Aftermarket support is big on that motor compared to the zc. And you could build the y8 while you keep your zc in the car. Then when you get the motor done and it sell your zc to pay part of it off.

i dont really know all that much about turbos but i know that with an external wastegate you have more boost adjustability.
