Riding the Rev limiter

Next weekend I'd like to take my CRX out auto-crossing. She's got 199,500 miles on her and I'd really like for her to see 200,000. It will probably not happen in the next week though. So the engine needs to survive.

I got a couple of questions. At what rpms does the rev limitor kick in on a stock D16A6? Is it safe to ride the rev limitor, or should I keep her at or below 6500 rpms? I'd feel very comfortable riding the rev limiter on a fairly new engine, but what about one that has got 200k on it?

Re: Riding the Rev limiter

http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbul...ight=rev+limit

redline is 6800 Rrpm
rev limit is 7200 Rpm

I personally would avoid cruising at it because it cuts out the fuel, and that is really hard on your little engine.

Re: Riding the Rev limiter

That thread is talking about a d16y8. I have the stock D16A6. I'm pretty sure that my redline is at 6500 rpms. Can someone shed some more light on this?

Re: Riding the Rev limiter

Yeah, there is no point in it, the power is not peaking at that high of an rpm, you should shift.

Re: Riding the Rev limiter

There is no need to hold it at rev limit. Your not making that much power, your going through gas like a mad man, and your stressing your motor real bad. Especially on an old motor. I wouldnt want to hold it at 5500 that long.

Re: Riding the Rev limiter

d16a6 rev limit cut-out is 7200rpms. Without any mods you won't be making any more power at that rpm anyway. If you want to drive home from the autocross don't rev so high. Autocross is all about smoothness anyway, not spinning tires and high hp...

Re: Riding the Rev limiter

I thought that the point of riding the rev limiter is so to save two shifts. Suppose you have a turn coming up, you're already doing 50 in second, instead of shifting to third and downshifting to second before the corner, you just go up to the rev limiter, say to like 55-60, and that way you save 2 shifts.

Re: Riding the Rev limiter

well thats going to depend how long before the corner you have, its a judgment call.

Re: Riding the Rev limiter

It may depend on the tranny you're using and the slope of the land or weight of your vehicle, hp, etc. I think second would be a good choice for any tranny with a decent engine making adequate power to scoot along with smooth throttle response. A short shifter might help the problem with shifting faster. You don't want oversteer in third trying to maneuver a corner because you'll just slide out and fuck up. Second at high rpm can get twitchy though and drift.
