clink when shifting,at first assumed just u-joint,I'm now told drive shaft needs replacing. Is this unusual in a 98,6cyl,4wd extra cab with 90,000 miles on it?

Re: tacoma drive shaft
The driveshaft assembly should have several grease fittings. If they have never been lubricated it could be worn out. I assume your dealer is telling you the driveshaft must be replaced? The U joints and center bearing for units with a center bearings are replacable components. If your driveshaft has a worn double cardan joint the shaft will need replacing. First try lubricating all the fittings, if there are plugs where the fittings should be, get some grease fittings and grease the assembly, that may be all you need. If grease doesn't help and you are located in an area that does lots of truck drive line work ask them some questions about repairing the assembly, they should be able to help. If you do have to replace the complete assembly keep it greased for longer life.

Re: tacoma drive shaft
i think they call it the yolk (sp?) goes bad in the driveshaft and yes it can be caused by lack of grease. i guess it wouldnt hurt to lube it up and drive it for a bit and if that doesnt help then obviously replace it.
