heater blower squeak
I recently started turning my heat on in the morning. I was using the defrost/floor output and when I turned the speed up to 3 it started chirping or whistling just enough to drive me crazy. It does it on speeds 1-3. If I turn it to four or 5 it stops.
Is my blower going out? |

Re: heater blower squeak
The answer to the question is yes! The bearing is going out in the fan and it will need to be replaced. The fan is up under the dash on the passenger side of the car. It helps to remove the seat to get to it. You can buy a new one from a dealer or a used one from a wrecking yard.

Re: heater blower squeak
Does that mean if it goes out I won't have any heat at all?

Re: heater blower squeak
Actually the blower itself has a bad bearing. You can try to lubricated the bearing but it is just as easy to change it.
You are correct that you will have no heat. The heat will only make it as far as the heater core and there won't be anyway to push it into the passenger compartment. A used fan only costs about $25 and it is not hard to change. I would keep one on hand just in case. |

Re: heater blower squeak
I called my mechanic today and he said it was probably the blower motor and would cost like 176 with labor to fix. Is the fan and motor the same deal and where actually is it? Under the glove box area???

Re: heater blower squeak
The fan and motor are connected as an assembly although you can purchase the motor seperately. Like I mentioned earlier, go to the local wrecking yard and buy one. You can get one for about $25 and put it in yourself. You may want to lubricate the bearings with a little light oil before you put it in but $150 is quite a savings.
The blower is located on the passenger side way up under the dash. You can't get to it by removing the glove box. You can get to it without removing the seat but if you do it gives you a lot of extra room. There are three bolts and it takes a 6.5 mm socket. |

Re: heater blower squeak
I pulled down the carpet behind and under the glove box and found it. I just need to unscrew the bolts and unclip the harness area? That seems simple enough. I am pretty accident prone so nothing seems too easy to me.

Re: heater blower squeak
It is a simple job just tight quarters. You shouldn't have any problems changing the fan and motor. I changed one years ago on a 76 Lemans when it was 10 degrees below zero F. Noise got so bad I couldn't handle it any longer. Good Luck!

Re: heater blower squeak
make sure you specify whether you have auto or manual control a/c (or get one from a similarly equipped car if you go to the bone yard), as the blower motors are different.
