1997 Blazer no-go

Got a 1997 Blazer 2wd 4.3 with a 4L60E automatic that will not go forward. It goes into reverse with no problem.. It is my wife's ride and after exiting off of the highway, stopped for a red light. When it turned green, it wouldn't move in any forward gear... a nice policeman stopped traffic and she was able to back-up to get off of the roadway...I can't have her driving around in reverse everywhere... The fluid level is full & it doesn't smell or look burned... the trans was serviced at 50000 & again at 100000 (currently has 142000 miles) I am not sure where to begin troubleshooting to determine if it is something simple or if it is time for a new transmission ... I's appreciate sound advice ...thanks...dP

Is the service engine soon lite on? Did you scan for any codes in the computer?

replace your ignition switch !!

do a search on this forum for ignition switch ... causes all sorts of mysterious problems including tranny problems and is a #1 problem for 97's ... it's dangerous too.

The description given sounds more like a tranny problem, not the switch.

Normally with a bad switch, you can't get the tranny out of park.
Because he has reverse and no forward, this doesn't sound like the switch to me.

Re: 1997 Blazer no-go

The service engine light has not illuminated... I haven't had it scanned yet.... I just had it towed home (which really hurts) and I've got to make time to check it... are the codes going to be specific or just give a general list of problems? Upon questioning my wife, she states that it had just started shifting hard from 1st to 2nd, especially when cold, but was smooth once it warmed up...

Re: 1997 Blazer no-go

Finally put a scanner (Actron OBD ll Diagnostic Tester) on it... at first I kept getting "0" so I let it run for about 15 minutes & it gave me a code 0147...in the Actron manual it says this is an 02 sensor....

Re: 1997 Blazer no-go

I found the new battery dead today...after charging, I let it get up to temp in PARK & put the scanner on it again...this time I got code P0712 & not the original 0147..after unplugging the scanner, the MIL illuminated as well as the ABS light...I cleaned every connection I could find with spray electronic cleaner...the check engine light went off, but the ABS stayed on... the brakes seem fine, but still no forward... reverse works fine... is there some sort of interlock between the brakes & trans that would keep it from going forward if a problem was detected in the brakes?

I still think you have a tranny problem. I've never heard of an interlock that prevents going forward if the brakes are hosed up, but you never know.

Your code is a tranny fluid temp sensor circuit low input. To me, this indicates either the sensor is shot, the ECM is giving a low level signal,
which might also light the brake ABS indicator, or some other tranny problem.
Sorry I can't offer much more. (I'd probably go to my local mechanic with this problem)
