I have a 92' dodge stealth r/t non-turbo. a few weeks ago i was driving it and it cut off on me and wouldnt start back up. i towed it to a shop and they replaced the mfi relay and it fixed it. the only problem i am having now is that when i push in the clutch going down the road the rpm drops to about 200 and the car almost dies but then it goes back up to idle at about 500 or 600 rpm. it also cut off on me one time the rpm's dropped so low. i was wondering if anyone had this same problem and if you could tell me what it might be.
thanks, |

Re: clutch rev drop to idle
Do you have a lightweight flywheel? That could cause issues like you describe. Maybe try to bump the idle up a hair to see if it cures it.

i dont have a lightweight flywheel. the only mods i have are FIPK, NGK iridium plugs, accel 8mm plug wires, took catalytic converter off and replaced with a glass pack and have straight pipe off of that into n1 muffler. i adjusted the idle and it doesnt do it as bad or as much but it still does it sometimes.

take a look at your MAS... that may be dirty... I had a similar problem after installing my cold-air intake... one of my hose clamps had busted during installation... I was driving down the road, hit a bump, and my intake blew-off... it was pulling air into the plenum and not through the MAS... that made the car run really bad, eat gas, cut off, run lean, etc... I made it home and popped the hood... found that the intake had popped off and replaced it... then car ran fine... thankfully my pistons didn't fry... as there was a lot of white smoke coming out of the tailpipes...

i bumped the idle up a little bit and it seems to do better but if i push the clutch in 1 or 2 gear the revs still drop down to about 300 rpm and then go back up to idle...i dont know if this is normal or if it is a sign of problems to come. i'm gonna take off my MAS tomorrow and clean it though i dont think this is the problem considering that it doesnt drop in higher gears, it wont hurt anything to clean it. its really not that big of a problem. the car doesnt cut off on me anymore since i bumped up the idle but i'm just worried that this may be a sign of problems to come. my car only has 64k miles on it and i just did the 60k mile tune-up. i just never had this problem before until the MFI relay went out and i had to replace it. i dont really think it is anything as serious as the ECU, i'm praying anyway because i'm broke right now. i can barely afford to keep gas in it. but if anyone else could offer some advice i would really appreciate it.

Re: clutch rev drop to idle
i wonder if maybe it could be the oxygen sensor...i didnt replace it in the 60k tune-up...should i replace it or would it even be the problem?

I've had 02 sensors go bad in other cars, most of the time that just made my car run very rich (eat gas) and lose hp... the other cars were low hp, non-performance vehicles though... there's always the possibility... you can take out the 02 sensor and examine it... if it looks all crudded up, there's a chance you can clean it. a friend of mine that's a mechanic told me to take an acetylene torch and heat the sensor until it's cherry red, and that supposedly burns off all that crud... there's always the possibility that the sensor just went bad and that no cleaning will help it though...

True, I didn't even think to suggest that... thanks... when I mentioned earlier, a/b the intake blowing off on my vehicle... that frayed the wires on my IAT sensor (not IAC, the Intake Air Temperature Sensor)... what would be the effect on my engine?

If I'm correct the IAC is a little sensor on the back of the throttle body... there's an IAT on the front side of the throttle body called the IAT sensor... the sensor is fine, but the connector/wires are damaged... am I correct or have I been given wrong info... if you'd like I can post pics...

Re: clutch rev drop to idle
The IAC is directly under the TB, there's a TPS to the right of the TB...IAT idk.

That's right, I'm sorry... it'd help if I thought a/b what I was saying first...tps is connected to the butterfly on TB, and the IAC is underneath... though from lookin under the hood on I think the fron side of TB, there's a sensor, I was told IAT, and when the intake blew off, the wires were yanked out of the connector... I'll do some reading and tell you what I found... I was just hoping someone knew off the top of their head...
