procedures required before timming adjustment

i need to adjust the timing on my 87 s-10 in the haynes maual it says there is procedure i need to do before i time it but it doesnt say what that is could ,anyone please help me out .
timming spec is 10 degrees before top dead centre.

Also if it's a 2.8 you need to have the engine warm so it will idle down, a high idle will advance the timing a bit even with the wire unhooked.
