88 golf smokes and idles bad

I just got a 1988 VW Golf for free. i'm not sure what trim package it is. it has a 1.8l 8v gas motor. It is studdering on acceleration and blowing black smoke. it eventually smooths out at higher rpms. it has a very erradic idle. i think its somethign to do with fuel but im not sure. ive done plugs wires. t belt. oil change im doing cap and rotor tomorrow. any ideas please let me know. also anybody who know what details are involved in a specific trim package. let me know

Its fuel injected, not carburated. there is a metal valve type of thing that plugs into the intake with wires coming out the back i was wondering what that was.
