Question HELP! Motor Mounts 99 Grand Am

I have a 1999 Grand Am that shakes when I come to a stop almost to the point where I think that it is going to die on me. I took the car to a mechanic and he said that I needed new motor mounts because the ones that were on the car now were collapsing. How expensive is this? I was quoted a price of 400 and while I know that it's not a lot of money to spend on a car, right now I don't have any extra money. Is there something else that it could be???? Any tips, advice, suggestions, or whatever would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

The rubber component is the only part that should need to be replaced. It is the part that fails, not the actual metal part that it attaches too. 400 is an appropiate price for the parts and labor combined. But I would inspect the mounts yourself and make sure it is actually the detiorated rubber that is causing the vibration. You said you think "it is going to die on you". Is there some symptoms you can tell us? If your engine is just simply sputtering / misfiring, then it's deffinately not mount related - it could totally be something different. Inspect the mounts, and then you'll know for sure if they actually are the culprit.

i just think that it is going to die on me because of the way it shakes. it doesnt' sputter or stall or anything, but it shakes so bad sometimes that i just dont' trust that it's going to stay running. scared that i will be there and my motor is going to lay on the road.

The rubber is part of the mounts.
If the mounts have collapsed, this will cause a firing frequency vibration through out the car and would make you believe that your car is running rough.
Replace the mounts and everything should be fine
