B18b

Well I was lookin' for an engine to swap and already had my mind set on the GSR. But I just found a B18B for 700$ with all the part needed for the swap (minus the tranny). I just had a couple questions.

1. It has lower compression than the GSR and this naturally makes it better for Turbos. Is the B18B considered the best Honda Engine to turbo?

2. Also I noticed that alot of the V-Tec engines have 10.6:1 (GSR) or higher for compression. Is this because of the V-Tec? I read somewhere that V-Tec was invented to negate the need for a turbo so this would explain it but is it true?

3. I know that you can later swap out the head for a Vtec. If question 2 is true than adding the head would highten the compression and make turbos less effective right?

So basically what I'm asking is what produce more HP when turboed and the internals completely done, (pistons, cams, port and polishin etc..)

LS or LS/Vtec

One Last Thing. I'm not sure what tranny to get. Some people said the LS Tranny sucks for Turbo and I was better off getting a B16. Of course I could always get the GSR tranny. I do plan on maxin' out the engine on about 400HP in the LONG run.

1. No even with its lower comp it still makes less power with just as much or a few psi more then a GSR. 10psi on LS nets 200-240 on a gsr 230-300 thats WHP. Best motor to turbo would be the one you can afford to build up but if we can add the K to the mix it would be that. Honestly best for a turbo I say the GSR.

2. Higher comp = more power its that simple the boost doesn't like high comp is a dumbed down explantion of why alot of PSI and high comp don't get along. Its all in the fuels and if your going to be running 93 its smarter to run 20 PSI @ 9.5:1 then 5PSI @ 11.0:1 comp. Race cars run 13+ comp and have 30+psi yet they run crazy fuels we dont get at Shell.

3. lsvtec turbo is great my friend who I copied his bottom end is running a lsvtec turbo and likes it better then his older gsr turbo setup. key with lsvtec is the builder and parts used. aside from the comp ratio and vtec the GSR ITR B16 head just flow better.

LS swaps are great go for it also aim for a b16 *y21* tranny or ITR one you'll be tearing b16s up like cake.

Whew thats the first time I got a fast friggin answer. Ok so higher comp means more power so whats the point of low compression pistons and high compression pistons. I thought that low comp was good for turbos (u stated that) and high comp was good for superchargers?

For an overall price the LS would be the best choice no? Also strapping on the V-Tec would get it close to GSR performance?

Know where I can get a b16 y21 or ITR tranny? And these can handle good amounts of HP?

You wouldn't happen to have like a parts list or something to go by to make sure the V-tec performs well?

Well, as I touched on its based on the fuels we get. Even better fuels have a limit still and it comes down into the chemical breakdown and all that stuff I can't honestly explain well. You will want lower comp if aiming for alot of psi stock comp for few psi and higher comp for N/A thats very simply put and not always true but sort of a rule of thumb.

For 700 a LS swap is a nice deal I'd take it!

Try looking on Honda techs market place for a good deal its a wonderful site worth the wait. Yes they can hold alot of HP friend has a 500ish HP DD GSR tranny thats been fine for around a year.

For parts list exactly what do you mean by performs well? I'd be happy to share my setup my block is ready for 15 psi and well im just an N/A geek. If you want lsvtec read alot up on it too many blow due to poor build and they often have a bad rap but its building errors atleast 95% of time.

Ok so I got it. two last but I need to know questions.

1. will throwing on a V-Tec head highten compression and make turbos less effective? (assuming big turbos and big PSI) Or since I plan on rebuilding the engine doesn't really matter.

2. What about throwing the Type R head of the B18C onto the LS?. I think the type R has higher comp then than the GSR.

You have to get high compression pistons for a ls/vtec setup or else it wont be as strong as it could be...and just putting on a vtec head wont raise the compression...thats what high compression pistons are for...it all depends on how you build your engine...and the type r head is good but if you get the ITR pistons along with that you can only do maybe 5-6psi until you rebuild...if you can get a type r head that would be great...if not try to get a b16a head...if not that then you can go for the gsr head...

LS/VTEC motors aren't the most reliable just cause the B18B block wasn't intentionally made to work with any VTEC head. Not to say there aren't any out there that haven't been reliable, but the best thing to do would be to have a professional put that together for you.

If I were you, I would forget about VTEC, just swap the B18B, build an insanely strong motor and boost the absolute piss out of it.

You can always build a ls/vtec to be reliable though...IF you have the money just make sure the ls/vtec setup is done right...i would just turbo the hell out of the motor and forget about the vtec...

You can only go as fast as your wallet lets you. The sky's the limit on any motor, it's a question of how much money do you have to put into it.

You must be talking about modding it to the point to where you have to service it every week. Nah I was sort of aiming towards an HP that would work as a daily driver and would be quick.

You said what's the max HP so I told you. As for daily driver I'd say I've had the most fun driving my friend's teg which is pushing a little over 250 whp. Enough power to make it fun, and still reliable enough to call a honda.
